Lessons to be learned

Updated: May 29, 2023

Every country is unique and the challenges of policing in every jurisdiction have to be dealt with as they are encountered by officers on the ground. The reality though is that where police act harshly and with force, there will inevitably be harsh reactions. If police officers are to have the power of the law over the citizens of a community, there is a responsibility incumbent upon them to exercise that power with care and respect. Lessons from around the world, and especially from similarly high-threat environments as many American police officers face, have shown that a less confrontational, consent-based approach can be highly successful. Yasmeen Serhan's excellent article "What the World Could Teach America About Policing" in The Atlantic of June 10 2020 is an excellent read on this topic. Have a read and let us know what you think about the lessons American police could learn from international partners.
